Waterloo Open Space Project
· Schools
· Libraries
· Post offices
· Pubs
· Place of worship
· Museum
· Transportation – Bus stops
· Theatres
· Hotels
· Groceries & convenience storesAll this are all mapped and shown where these amenities are situated on the maps
· From the research of data of amenities that I have found, collected and mapped, is that most of the amenities are not situated close to the local residential people.
· The major amenity used in waterloo is the “pubs”. Waterloo has a lot of pubs at least on average about 2-3 pubs on each street. This is the main reason why waterloo has a lot of problems with street drinkers because the more the pubs are the more the street drinkers will become an issue to the local residents. The Street drinkers are a menace to the environment and are making people feel unsafe.
· Most of the amenities are found mostly around major landmarks (tourist areas), therefore it’s concluded that the government or local council are providing these amenities for mainly the tourist in other to that means to raise funds rather than the local people.
· For a small area like waterloo its got quite a lot of good available amenities to support the local people, the problem here is that its not been distributed evenly across waterloo.
· There are some areas, like for example lower marsh. This is a much known and heavily used are by both the local residence and the people from outside waterloo and neighbouring areas but looking at the mapping of the amenities, there is very little around the area which I think is very surprising. It’s the main place I was expecting to see quite a lot of amenities but instead my expectations are wrong.
Paddington Basin “Water Love Nest”
This is a story of two love birds and how their blooming relationship started. Mark and Kelly are crazy in love with each other. Kelly is a city woman and a blood thirsty Executive accountant in a financial firm in Paddington while Mark is a country side man from Kent and he is a Gardner. Mark and Kelly have known themselves since Childhood times. Back in those days, they went to the same Primary school in the countryside. It was then that Kelly had a crush on him and Mark fancied her too. They started dating when they got to high school.
Until one day, Kelly’s parents decided to relocate from the countryside Kent to the City of London, both mark and Kelly were gutted and weren’t happy. Kelly tried to convince her parents she didn’t like the city and want to stay behind in Kent both her parents refused. She couldn’t do anything about it and had to go away with her parents. Couple of months later Kelly and her parents left for London. As time went past, the only thing that Kelly was thinking was a way she could see Mark again but with time they both lost contact and later moved on with their lives.
After 10years of their separation, one sunny afternoon during lunch, Kelly went on her lunch break of work to get a cup of cappuccino, suddenly, her eyes met with some handsome built up guy. Before she knew it she was in a trans because this handsome guy happens to be Mark, her first love and best friend in the countryside. They both ran to each other and everywhere was filled with excitement. So they began to talk and relate to one another like they have always been together all these years.
It was then that Kelly realised that Mark has been living in the city of London too after two years when she relocated and has been searching for her everywhere. Now Lunch time is over and it was such a little for them to make you the times they missed together. Kelly went back to work that day. Since that time, they started where they had stopped their relationship. They have been dating for two months now and their romance has bloomed to its peak.
Clients Specification: Design a love nest for the love birds “Kelly & Mark”
- Design a concept of the Love Nest on an Imaginary site of Dimensions of 30m by 30m area which has a 4m wall sloping down every 1m.
- Love Nest must include a combination of “Land meeting Water” in a romantic way
In order to meet my clients specification, firstly i made a model and a collage showing different concepts of what i thought a love nest was….
Below also shows the Collage and a section across my collage of my concept:
This is the model of my imaginary site dimensions of 30m by 30m area which has a 4m wall sloping down every 1m.My model consist of 4m wall with Steps sloping down every 1m, a canal flowing through the site and also showing my initial concepts which is an “In-ground Sitting” Love Nest as shown below:
Now my clients have given me the name of the location where they want the Love Nest to be situated. They want me to in-cooperate my initial concept of Love nest (as shown above) into the new site and to try and make it work!!
Location:Paddington Basin, London
Site Area shown below:
Below shows the original Plan and section drawing of the new site Paddington Basin….

Development of Concept
Incorporating my idea onto Paddington Basin site, therefore testing and trying to make my in-ground sitting nesting to adapt to this site.
Firstly, i changed the shape and direction of the existing canal to run across the site. Also making my concept sit in the middle of the canal. As shown below:
Secondly, i decided to continue the pattern of the steps on the surface of the site in other to create a concrete paving pattern. As shown below:
Kingston Gateway Project
Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames has identified, in their Town Centre Area Action Plan (K+20), Five primary gateways and twelve secondary gateways in to the town centre. These gateways are presented within the context of their landscape analysis and strategies that form several character areas and proposal sites.
The methodology that was followed for identifying gateways around Kingston is only one approach. There are many ways of identifying and defining gateways that depend on our experience and knowledge of the landscape.
More details of this Project: http://www.kingston.gov.uk/kplus20
What is a gateway?
- a means of entering somewhere or a means of defining an entry to a new place not necessary having a physical gate.
- a structure for enclosing such an opening or entrance.
- any passage by or point at which a region may be entered.
-
an entrance or passage that may be closed by a gate.
Precedent study on gateways
Kingston College Roundabout
Kingston College Roundabout is one of the main gateway into Kingston upon Thames coming from South.
Site Analysis of Kingston College Roundabout showing:
- the good and bad qualities of the site and
- Circulation flow: both of light and heavy pedestrians (both on foot and cyclist) and motorist.
- Pattern of use
The Gateway Proposal of the College Roundabout
My proposal for the college roundabout is to have a gateway arch which acts as a two way pass for both pedestrians and the motorist
Also to put a sculpture in the middle of the roundabout to replace the the current vegetation that is there at the moments as shown the the about picture.
Kingston’s Coat of Arms
Interpretation: The shield is the ancient coat of arms of the former Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, recorded in 1572 and 1623. It bears three salmon on blue in reference to the three fisheries mentioned in Domesday Book.
I have decided to use the history of Kingston Upon Thames and its Coat of Arms (i.e using the 3 salmon fishes on the coat of arms as the sculpture on the roundabout and also carved into the arch of the gateway.
